Birmingham Royal Ballet is a ballet company based in Birmingham, where it has been resident since 1990. The company traces its history to 1931 and Dame Ninette de Valois, originating from the Vic-Wells Ballet at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. It performs classical ballet and contemporary dance, presenting both grand romantic ballets and newly created works. The company commissions pieces from established and emerging choreographers and tours throughout the UK and internationally. Carlos Acosta serves as Director, with performances accompanied by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
The company operates as a charity and company limited by guarantee. Its stated mission is to reach out and move people with great ballet and music, create new works, and release creative potential in people of all ages and backgrounds. BRB2 is a two-year performance programme for dancers aged 18–22 who train and perform with the main company. The Learning, Engagement, Access and Participation team runs community projects, school programmes, and workshops for children and adults. Dance Track is a talent identification programme for children aged six to eight. The company also supports Freefall Dance Company, a group of dancers with learning disabilities.
