The Australian Ballet is accepting expressions of interest to audition in London on Saturday 29 July 2023, for contracts to commence in the second half of 2023.

About the role:
As a dancer with The Australian Ballet you’ll be required to rehearse, understudy, and perform such roles with The Australian Ballet as allocated by the Artistic Director in accordance with your training, experience, and ability. There is a touring component of up to six months per year associated with this position.
What you’ll be doing:
- rehearse, understudy and perform roles allocated by the Artistic Director and in accordance with the circulated performance cast schedule
- rehearse, understudy and perform roles at theatres or other places of public performance as the Company may nominate from time to time
- attend classes and rehearsals as set out in the class and rehearsal schedules
- follow up on advice from The Australian Ballet Artistic Health team (or referrals)
- maintain physical and mental wellbeing (strength, endurance, and mobility)
- represent The Australian Ballet when required for media, publicity, and sponsorship events
- work in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions of the current Dancers’ Enterprise Agreement
- work in accordance with the general rules and conditions pertaining to dancers of The Australian Ballet including Rules of the Theatre
- undertake any other duties or roles as reasonably requested by the Artistic Director

Visa and relocation expenses
The Australian Ballet will pay all work visa costs for successful applicants, including English tests and medicals where necessary.
Limited financial support for relocation to Australia may be available by individual negotiation.
Salary and available contracts
Contracts are available across all genders, heights, and ranks.
Salaries are set in The Australian Ballet’s Enterprise Agreement. Only Principal Artist salaries are open to negotiation.
- Corps de Ballet from $2,662.36
- Coryphée $3,178.67
- Soloist from $3,458.61
- Senior Artist $3,831.86
- Principal Artist from $4,331.06
- All salaries listed are in Australian dollars per fortnight before tax, and exclude an additional 11% superannuation contribution (the Australian equivalent of a retirement pension)
Requirements:
- Extensive training in classical ballet
- To successfully fulfil the roles and responsibilities as outlined above, the dancer should demonstrate:
- Superior dance technique
- Appropriate skills and knowledge for learning, rehearsing and performing dance roles as part of the body of dancers
- Stagecraft skills
- The ability to undertake all responsibilities associated with make-up and costume as required
- Musicality as appropriate to performing as a dancer
- The ability to interpret the choreographic content of a production
- Overall physical attributes required for a dancer performing with The Australian Ballet as determined by the Artistic Director.

Audition Process
Auditions will be by invitation. Interested dancers should submit an expression of interest for consideration. Applications close 5pm Friday 9 June AEST.
If you have previously submitted your details to The Australian Ballet’s dancer pool, please re-submit for this specific audition opportunity.
All dancers who submit an expression of interest will be contacted by Saturday 1 July to confirm if they have been invited to audition.
Invited dancers will attend one of two classes on Saturday 29 July.
Selected dancers may then be invited to attend a follow up interview on Sunday 30 July, in person in London or remotely via Zoom.
All dancers who attend the audition will be contacted by Friday 25 August to confirm if they have been offered a contract.
Travel Bursaries
The Australian Ballet understands that traveling for auditions can be expensive, and we want to ensure that our opportunities are as far reaching as possible.
If you would like to attend the audition but need financial help to do so, we can offer up to £200 to help towards travel costs.
To be eligible for support, applicants need to meet one of the following criteria:
- Be from a household with an annual income of under £28,000 (or equivalent)
- Have a declared disability
- Be a care giver
- Be from a Global Majority background
- Be Trans/Gender diverse
