OPEN CALL – AUDITION FOR MALE PRINCIPAL SOLOIST
or the 2026/2027 season , the Rijeka National Ballet Company is seeking candidates for the position of:
PRINCIPAL SOLOIST
1 position – replacement
The successful candidate will join the professional ballet ensemble of the Rijeka National Ballet Company for the 2026/2027 season.
Job Description:
Prepares, interprets, and participates in the creation of ballet and dance performances within the neoclassical and contemporary ballet repertoire. The candidate must possess excellent classical ballet technique and contemporary ballet techniques; demonstrate a masterful command of classical ballet lifts and partnering skills; and actively participate in the artistic creation of performances through various forms of improvisation and creative initiatives.
In addition to knowledge and application of primary neoclassical ballet and contemporary dance techniques, the candidate must possess other skills, including: contact improvisation, basic acrobatics, as well as performing experience with video and contemporary digital technologies.
Depending on the assessment of required competencies conducted by the Director, the dancer shall also participate in Theater projects that are not exclusively or primarily of a ballet/dance nature, such as: drama productions, opera productions, musicals, educational workshops and plays, concerts, formal academies, special events, and similar activities.
Participates in all public promotional and advertising activities that promote Ballet as an artistic branch and the Theater as a whole: press conferences, interviews, photo shoots, artist talks with the audience, etc.
Participates in the implementation of educational programs as part of the Theater’s regular activities.
Minimum Required Education: Secondary school education (High School Diploma)
Required Professional or Artistic Specialization: Graduation from a secondary ballet school in the Republic of Croatia. For candidates educated abroad, another related or equivalent education will be accepted.
Required Work Experience: At least 2 (two) years of work experience in the field of ballet and dance theater activity.
Required Foreign Language Proficiency: Active knowledge of and communication in the English language, including the use of professional terminology/vocabulary in English.
Required Special Experience, Skills, and Renown in a Specific Field: Renown in the field of ballet and dance theater art, with significant experience in ballet and dance repertoire. This must be proven by meeting the following conditions: performances in at least five supporting and leading roles (minimum of two leading roles) and at least 3 critical reviews highlighting the artist’s excellence.
A Principal Ballet Dancer is a soloist whose artistic work is of exceptional importance for the development and reputation of the Ballet of the Croatian National Theater Ivan pl. Zajc.
Special Requirements: An audition is not required for the position of ballet soloist with the status of a Principal Dancer.
AUDITION
Candidates will be shortlisted based on their submitted applications.
Selected candidates will receive an invitation to the audition by email.
The audition will take place at the Rijeka National Ballet Company studios on 23 and 24 October 2026 .
Individual/private auditions may be arranged for dancers who are unable to attend on these dates.
