Leipzig Opera is a performing arts company based in Leipzig, Germany. The organisation consists of three main divisions: the Opera, the Leipzig Ballet, and the Musical Comedy. The city has a long history of opera, with its first opera house opening in 1693. Today, the company produces a wide range of performances throughout the season.
The opera division stages traditional and modern operas, with a historical focus on the works of Richard Wagner and other classical composers. The Musical Comedy division performs operettas and musicals. Leipzig Opera does not employ its own orchestra. Instead, the Gewandhaus Orchestra plays for its opera and ballet productions.
The company organises educational programmes for different age groups. This includes a children’s choir and youth theatre groups. Workshops and introduction sessions are provided for schools and the public to explain the productions and the different areas of theatre work.
