The Lucy Griffiths Dance and Theatre Academy was established in September 1994 and became a limited company in September 2012. In September 2016, The Sara Phillips School of Dancing merged with the Academy to form its Bromley branch. Lucy Griffiths serves as principal. The Academy operates locations in Orpington, Green Street Green, Bromley and Chislehurst, including a purpose-built studio in Orpington with Harlequin sprung dance flooring.

The Academy teaches students from toddler age through adulthood. Classes follow the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing syllabus in Ballet, Tap and Modern, progressing from Primary through Grade Six with vocational grades also available. Additional offerings include Street Dance, Contemporary, Acrobatic Arts, Musical Theatre, Drama, Singing, Pre-Pointe and Pointe Work, and private lessons. Pre-school programs include Melody Bear Ballet classes. Adult classes are offered in Tap, Modern and Ballet.

Students have achieved places with the Royal Ballet, Kent Youth Ballet and English Youth Ballet, performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre and Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, and appeared in West End musicals including Billy Elliot, Oliver and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Many older students have successfully taken places in full-time courses to pursue careers within the arts.

The Academy follows the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) syllabus in Ballet, Tap and Modern. Ballet, Modern and Tap classes teach dance terminology, good lines through the body, arm and head, good posture, spatial awareness, self-expression and confidence. Street Dance has no syllabus and focuses on natural rhythm and routines inspired by chart music and videos.

All pupils, including pre-school children and adults, are invited to perform in bi-annual shows held at local theatres. Children also perform in local events such as summer fetes and fairs.
