Martin Chaix - Independent Ballet Choreographer Based in Germany - Benois de la Danse Nominee

About Martin Chaix

Independent choreographer Martin Chaix creates ballets examining classical and contemporary technique, working with major companies across Europe and Asia including the Bolshoi Ballet and Vienna State Ballet.

Description

Martin Chaix (pronounced “sheks”) is an independent, project-based choreographer based in Germany. Born in Albi, France, he trained at the École de Danse de l’Opéra National de Paris from 1993 to 1999 and performed with the Paris Opera Ballet, Leipzig Ballet, and Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg before becoming a full-time choreographer in 2015. Over 18 years, he has created more than 30 works that examine what classical technique takes for granted and what contemporary dance assumes, moving between full-evening narrative ballets and pure abstraction. His choreographic practice interrogates how classical ballet vocabulary can articulate contemporary consciousness through cross-cultural artistic exchange and reexamination of the classical canon.

He has created works for the Bolshoi Ballet, Vienna State Ballet, Opéra national du Rhin, Leipzig Ballet, Saarland State Theater, Ballett am Rhein, Paris Opera Ballet School, and Liaoning Ballet. His repertoire includes reinterpretations of classical works such as *Giselle* (2023), *Firebird* (2016), and *Apollo* (2019), alongside original ballets including *QiXi / Magpie Bridge* (2024), *A Streetcar Named Desire* (2024), and *Silentium* (2020). His 2023 *Giselle* earned him a Benois de la Danse nomination in 2024.
