Kaunas Dance Theater “Aura” is a professional contemporary dance company based in Kaunas, Lithuania. It began as a modern dance studio founded by Birutė Letukaitė in 1980, with its first public concert in 1982. The theater was formally registered under its current name in 1995. Artistic director Letukaitė studied dance of expression with Kira Daujotaitė and performed for twelve years in the ensemble “Sonata.” In 2011, the company became international, with dancers from countries including France, Italy, Japan, the Philippines, Albania, South Korea, China, and the United States.
The theater’s productions include “Me As You,” its first performance for children, “The Loop” in collaboration with choreographer Emanuel Gat, “Godos” with Panta Rei Dance Theatre, and “Infinities” with Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra. The company has performed at more than 160 festivals in over 30 countries. Since 1989, it has organized an annual International Dance Festival AURA each autumn in Kaunas, which was renamed in 2011.
Aura also operates a dance studio offering classes for children from age 13, with beginner and advanced groups meeting twice weekly at its location on M. Daukšos street.
